Char-Meck Girls Softball League: A Brief History

For over two decades, the Char-Meck (CM) Girls Softball League has been a pillar of youth softball in the Charlotte/Mecklenburg area. The league's journey began in the late 1990s with a significant transition from slow-pitch to fast-pitch softball, aligning with high school standards and better preparing players for their future athletic careers.

The turn of the millennium marked a period of substantial growth for CM. Between 2000 and 2001, the league expanded significantly, welcoming new associations and growing to 74 teams by the spring of 2001. This expansion coincided with a series of innovations in the early 2000s, including the introduction of ASA umpires, 8U pitching rules, and all-star teams.

In 2003, CM took a step to encourage earlier participation in softball by adding a 6U tee-ball/coach pitch division. By 2005, the league had reached a remarkable milestone, hosting a record 139 teams across its spring and fall seasons. This year also saw the launch of the league's first website, enhancing communication and organization.

The league's growth continued into the 2010s, with new associations like Porter Ridge, MARA, and Waxhaw joining the CM family. In 2014, responding to the evolving needs of its players, CM introduced the Challenge Softball program, offering more competitive play options.

Throughout its history, the Char-Meck Girls Softball League has consistently adapted to meet the changing needs of its players, expanding age brackets and enhancing competitive opportunities. Today, it remains committed to providing a quality softball experience for girls in the Charlotte/Mecklenburg area, building on its rich history of growth and innovation.
